1948 torch in Babbacombe

Saturday 26 May saw the 1948 sailing relay torch arrive in Babbacombe to be looked after by Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club. It was down on Oddicombe Beach most of the day where the club had fun activities going on including various games.

It then travelled up the cliffside in Babbacombe Cliff Railway and was taken to the Sailing Club in St Marychurch where there was an evening of celebrations with live music and entertainment.

Sunday morning and the torch was off to Teignmouth to be met halfway by Seasports South West on the next part of its relay by boat from Oddicombe. The final destination for the torch is Weymouth, home of the sailing events at this year’s Olympic Games.

Ken Ricketts, Rear Commodore of Babbacombe Sailing Club, said “It was lovely to have the torch here over the weekend. We were delighted to be a part of this special relay and everyone had a great time. We’re so lucky to have Oddicombe Beach on our doorstep as it’s a great, family beach and a lovely place to learn and to sail from. This is a very friendly club and the clubhouse was full on Saturday night. We’re always looking for new members, whether you’re interested in sailing or just looking for somewhere to socialise and we run various sailing courses throughout the year.”

The next sailing event is the Club’s regatta which will be held over the weekend of 16 and 17 June.

Torch travels in style on Babbacombe Cliff Railway

After all the excitement of last weekend’s torch procession through the bay, this Saturday 26 May will see the 1948 sailing relay torch arrive on Oddicombe Beach at around 2pm. It will have travelled by sea from Brixham along with a flotilla of boats.

There will then be some great family fun with games down on Oddicombe before the torch travels up in a Babbacombe Cliff Railway carriage at around 5pm where it will then be taken to Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club for an evening of celebrations.

Activities down on the beach will include Mummy warp, Horse shoes, Frisbee Golf, Water Balloon challenge, Big Squeeze and a Tug of war.

There will also be a free taster sailing session for anyone who is interested in learning to sail whatever their age.

John Ayres, Chairman of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway Community Interest Company, said “We are delighted to be able to help transport the 1948 torch and be a part of the celebrations. It’s great that it will be at Oddicombe Beach and hopefully people will come along to see it. It’s the perfect opportunity to visit the Cliff Railway Visitor Centre as well as find out more about Babbacombe Sailing Club.”

After its night in Babbacombe the torch will go back down to Oddicombe early on Sunday morning where it will set sail for its next port of call, Teignmouth.
